How do I make a donation?

You can make a one-time or monthly sustaining donation online or by mail. If you would like to mail us a check, please print out and include this form with your donation.

How much is a membership, and what benefits do I receive as a member?

Any amount makes you a member for a year. Benefits to membership are invitations to CIR Live! events, Dialed In (our monthly editorial conference calls) and knowing you are upholding democracy and holding powerful interests accountable.

What is the Sustainer program?

Our Sustainers make automatic monthly credit card donations to The Center for Investigative Reporting. They are our most dedicated supporters, allowing us to focus more resources on journalism. Members like our Sustainer program because it’s convenient and ensures uninterrupted membership. You can become a Sustainer here. You can change or stop your monthly donation at any time.

Is my donation tax deductible?

Yes. The Center for Investigative Reporting is a registered 501(c)(3) tax-exempt charity. Our tax ID number is 94-2434026. Your donations are tax deductible to the fullest extent of the law.

Is my payment secure?

The Center for Investigative Reporting uses Authorize.Net to process all of our online donations. Authorize.Net uses industry-leading technologies and protocols, such as 128-bit Secure Sockets Layer (SSL), and is compliant with a number of government and industry security initiatives.

Is there a membership for journalism students?

Yes. Any amount makes you a J Member, entitled to full member benefits plus special webinars with investigative reporters and editors. Visit our Start Something page for more information.

Can I give a gift membership?

Yes. You can also give a J Membership to a student. Please contact us at membership@cironline.org with the gift member’s name and email address, as well as any gift message you would like the recipient to receive.

If you prefer to give a gift by mail, please print this form and mail it to:

How can I get my employer to match my donation to CIR?

Many large employers have matching programs that double or even triple the amount you donate to registered tax-exempt 501(c)(3) charities like The Center for Investigative Reporting. Ask your company’s human resources department whether it matches employee contributions.

You may need the following information to fill out your company’s matching form:

  • Tax ID number: 94-2434026
  • Address: 1400 65th Street, Suite 200, Emeryville, CA 94608

Please contact us if you need more information.

Will I receive a tax receipt for my donation?

Yes. If you’ve made a one-time online donation, you will get a tax receipt within the confirmation email as well as by mail. If you make a recurring monthly donation, we will mail you a tax receipt summarizing your contributions in that calendar year.
