Tobacco Traffic

Reporter Mark Schapiro and producer Oriana Zill de Granados uncover the involvement of major tobacco companies in organizing mass-scale smuggling of cigarettes into Colombia, and reveal how the profits were laundered through the Black Market Peso Exchange. This CIR/NOW co-production also implicates the tobacco companies in brazen reshaping of the USA Patriot Act in order to insulate themselves from charges of smuggling and money laundering. The story was shown in Congress in conjunction with a bill introduced by Rep. Lloyd Doggett (D-TX) that would limit such smuggling enterprises in the future. A companion print story, "Big Tobacco," appeared on the cover of The Nation.
